Positioning

underline
Before clear stamps came along, stampers using traditional rubber stamps needed a way to precisely position images.

You’ll need:
positioning

  • Positioner (this can an acrylic “T” like the StampaLiner above, or I’ve seen “L” shapes, I’ve seen them made of both acrylic or wood)
  • Scrap of plexiglass or acrylic (no more than about 1/8 inch thick), or piece of tracing paper or vellum will work too
  • Rubber stamps
  • Paper or cardstock

STEP 1
positioning-1-sm
For this example I’m putting this kitty onto a chair. So the first thing you’ll want to do is stamp the kitty onto your piece of cardstock.

STEP 2
positioning-2-sm
Create a mask for kitty.

STEP 3
positioning-3-sm
This step is important! Align the piece of acrylic/plexiglass/see-through paper so that the edges fit snuggly up against the inside of the positioner.

If you choose a piece of paper make sure that it doesn’t slip under the positioner or this won’t work.

STEP 4
positioning-4-sm
Ink the stamp and without moving the positioner or plexiglass line up the edges and stamp it on the plexiglass butting the edges of the stamp right up against the positioner.

STEP 5
positioning-5-sm
Remove the stamp. You should now have a stamped image on your plexiglass.

STEP 6
positioning-6-sm
Line up the image on the plexiglass (in this case the chair) where you want it to end up OVER the kitty with the mask.

STEP 7
positioning-7-sm
Being careful NOT to move the plexiglass, line up the edge of the positioner against the edge of the plexiglass.

STEP 8
positioning-8-sm
In this step being careful NOT to move the positioner this time, pull the plexiglass away.

STEP 9
positioning-9-sm
Ink your stamp and carefully butt the edges up against the positioner (that should still be in the same place you left it back in STEP 9). Make sure the edges are completely lined up BEFORE the stamp touches your paper. Once it’s lined up press down on your stamp.

STEP 10
positioning-10-sm
Lift the stamp up. The chair should now be over the masked kitty.

STEP 11
positioning-11-sm
Pull off the mask…and all should be well. :)

Here’s another example, this time I was lining up the windows all in a row. I then used the technique again to line up the animals in the windows.positioning-lineup-sm
