linda-amanda-smLayers and stitching seem to follow Linda wherever she goes. I just love it!

She sent me this card, you may have seen it if you follow her blog, but it’s just too cute. What I really like is that even though there’s a LOT going on, layers, pattern and embellishments little Amanda doesn’t get lost. In fact I think one of the first things you see is those big white eyes.

I’m definitely going to be trying more layering in the new year. :)

Beachy Keen

Her inspiration…her top ten ways to embarrass your children. She added a small disclaimer that she’s not responsible for any childhood therapy! She also says should giggle at your own risk. I might also add, make sure your bladder isn’t full! :)

Ok, the list:
10. The spit wash – licking your thumb and wiping dirt off their face. Hey, and if it’s chocolate, lick your thumb again and say Yum!

9. Ingratiating yourself with their friends by trying to talk teen slang. Groovy Dude!

8. Friend all their buds and post their baby pictures on your Facebook page. Bare Baby Butts.

7. Regale their friends with stories of cute little things your child said when they were little. Mispronounced words, like “pissgetti” and “Let’s get Farching,” will really crack them up and increase your child’s popularity.

6. Pick up your kids from school with black workout Spandex. If they give you too much grief, just change into the leopard print ones.

5. Yell at the refs while they’re playing ball. “What are you, Blind?!”

4. Give your husband a big ‘ole smooch. But, hey, keep it clean.

3. Serve cupcakes with blue icing for their birthday. Blue teeth for all.

2. Take them bra shopping with you. Try on the bra over your clothes while passers-by snicker at how absurd you look.

And the number one way to embarrass your children:

Polka-dot bunny suit

Puppy Love

Felt Cookies

Thank you card

linda-thankyou-sm Linda sent this card in and she couldn’t get out of the Christmas mood yet! I’m so glad – this is the cutest! It’s a thank you card and it’s just perfect with the little kids and their reindeer sweaters.

  • Sewing on cards is one of my very favorite techniques. I usually attach my sewn panels to my card by using score tape over the stitches across the back of the panel. It keeps the stitches from unraveling. While stitching on paper is easy, it is less forgiving than stitching on fabric. If you make a mistake, you can’t really pull out your stitches without risking tearing the paper. So, every time you change the thread or bobbin, change from straight to zig-zag, adjust the size or length of your stitches, etc., try a few stitches on scrap paper. And, always make sure you have enough thread in your bobbin.
  • Next time your looking for fun embellishments for your cards, check out the artificial flower isles. My bouquet on top of the bow is a flower pick from Hobby Lobby.
  • Embossing plates and folders aren’t just for cardstock. Try them on your pattern/designer paper for an interesting effect. I used the Cuttlebug dotted Swiss embossing folder on the striped paper and the white card stock.
  • Make a glittery frame around your image by sprinkling glitter over score tape applied placed around the outer edges.

Finding the Right Tree

linda-ChristmasTree-sm Linda’s been busy! Here’s another card she sent in. I love the distressed, vintage look. And after reading her papery-quilt technique – I certainly want to try this on something!

This is what she wrote:

When I saw Holly’s quilt pattern that matches this stamp, I knew what I wanted to do – make a card like a pieced quilt. So, the only ink in this card is Memento Rich Cocoa – everything else is put together with patterned paper. Yep, I stamped the image no less than ten times on different sheets of patterned and embossed paper. I stamped the dog alone five times on five different shades of gold and brown. BasicGrey paper worked great because there are so many color shades within the same sheet of paper.

Start by stamping the whole image on just a white or beige piece of paper to serve as your guide. You can cut out the pieces you need and assemble the scene onto the white paper from the back of the scene working forward. The little dog is popped up with dimensional adhesive. Then, to keep that homey quilt feel going, you can use scrap gingham fabric for a bow and add lots of crazy sewing. If you’re brave enough to try this, here’s a tip – use liquid adhesive so you can adjust the little pieces easier, and have a good set of tweezers handy.

Mitten Alert!

She sent in this wonderful mitten project – it’s all ONE card! I love the mitten, it looks so snuggly and warm. The first photo (above) is the outside of the card, and this one (below) is the inside.

She also shared her instructions, here’s what she wrote…

Here are a few other tips for making a card like this (brave souls):

  1. To make the mitten you can use the new Nestabilities Nested Mittens die cut. So much fun! Hobby Lobby has some lovely embossed felt in their craft isle, and I found the fake fur in their fabric section. You can sew two mittens together with a button-hole stitch so you can slip a dollar or something fun inside it, and then attach the fake fur with fabric glue (Fabri-Tac). The leaf, berry, pine cone, etc., were from a stash of flower picks I dissected for their parts. I have a stash of all the fancy Scrapbooking, archival safe Prima flowers, but I often turn to the fake flower section of Hobby Lobby for unique and cheap flower embellishments. Just pull off what you need from the arrangements and throw the rest away.
  2. For the inside, the chipboard frames are from Maya Road. Just paint them with Tim Holtz Distress Crackle Paint (Peeled Paint) and sponge them with distress inks. The sentiments were printed from my computer and layered under the frames. You can tie the bow to the frame before adhering the sentiment underneath it – a fun way to embellish chipboard frames.
  3. To color this adorable image from Eat Cake Graphics, just stamp him onto some Neenah paper and a couple more times on your coordinating pattern paper and paper piece away. I added a little Rock Candy Distress Stickles to the snow as a last thought and love how it came out.
